Doors on the Green
Doors on the Green is a uniquely Amherstian experience. Since Amherst has the awesome experience of having Halloween centered around the Green, three years ago someone opined on the Facebook group that it was a shame that there was no way for people who didn't live on the Green to hand out candy. The Makerspace, just having come into being, leapt into action, and in the space of a few days, in coordination with the Rec department was born Doors on the Green: for a nominal sum (around $25), you can get a free-standing door and 10' spot on the Green for the evening of Halloween. It's been tremendously successful, and a huge amount of fun. Additionally, some of the little ones, and others on the autism spectrum, are somewhat overwhelmed by the large crowds in the dark. For this reason, in 2017, "Toddler time" came about: between the hours of 5:00 and 6:00 and only for Doors on the Green, and specifically at those trying to enjoy a more moderate experience. Once that's over, it's regular Halloween from 6:00 - 8:00.
